As you have probably found out by now Diets in general, don’t work, at least not in the longer term. As a nation we are not getting smaller, in fact all the indications are we are getting bigger. Dieting, Diet Plans Low Fat Diets and slimming groups such as Weight Watchers are big business. So why is the multi billion dollar diet industry not serving it’s customers?…. We all know dieting is a growth industry, the reason is because diet plans have limited success on their own as a means of reaching and maintaining your ideal body weight, so they are guaranteed to generate repeat business with supposedly ever more new scientifically generated ways of reducing your waistline, losing weight and generating eternal optimism about reaching your ideal weight goals, with the least commitment from you. If you have tried Diet Plans and slimming groups you will no doubt have found out that the results are only temporary because none of them have successfully addressed what will happen in the longer term, i.e. when your diet plan is finished. They may try, but the truth is that two thirds of us will regain all our weight plus a bit more within a year of a diet and 90% of us will have managed that within five years.

When we put our bodies on a diet when we wish to lose weight, we then restrict the amount of calories our body receives. Unfortunately for us our body quickly adapts……..to a “famine state” by limiting the amount of calories it uses. It slows down your body functions and tells you to not move around so much by making you feel tired or depressed. So you stop moving around as much and rest and conserve energy which slows down or stops your weight loss completely. Sometimes you will begin to lose muscle rather than fat which all helps to slow down your metabolic rate, so your body is now retaining every calorie it can as you starve it. So even if you are still losing Weight on your diet plan, you feel horrible, you can’t stop thinking about food and you have to muster every ounce of determination you have to stick at your diet. One day you tumble, either completely or a little at a time, your body which is now running in famine mode, starts getting an overload of calories simply because it has learned to survive on less.

 

 

It is confused, is it famine or feast time? It doesn't know so it decides to store as many of these calories as It can as fat, as It doesn't know when it may be famine time again, that is why your weight piles back on in a very short space of time after a diet. In many cases the weight gain can be higher after a diet than it was before you started as you revert back to your old eating habits. Each time you repeat this behaviour it becomes harder and harder to lose weight.
