That sometimes means even apportioning health benefits to foods that aren’t that genuine. Not knowing which health claims are genuine and which are just hype can lead us to make bad food choices which will result in it being hard for us to lose weight and of course this has a knock on effect with permanent weight loss and weight control.So in our consumer led society, who is really leading who? A recent American study involved two groups of people both with free access to cookies. One group was given regular cookies the other were given low fat cookies. What happened? The people with the low fat cookies simply ate more of them. In fact they ate a whopping 40% more of the low fat version! As you can imagine if this is the norm, it will completely undo any reason for eating the low fat version in the first place. In fact it it worse than eating the normal cookies because of the highly refined carbohydrate and chemicals that pad the product out instead of fat make them more likely to be converted to fat by the body..
There are two explanations for the fact that the group given the low fat version of the cookies ate so much more. One is that because they knew they were low fat they gave themselves ‘permission’ to eat more. The other explanation is that fat in food actually helps us recognize we have eaten enough. Either or more probably both of these reasons would be responsible for these findings.
So what does this mean for us? Well why not enjoy the full fat cookie? It will probably taste better, quite possibly it is cheaper and you will feel satisfied with fewer.
And what do these results mean for the cookie manufacturer? It means bigger profits! The low fat version is most likely sold for more since it is more desirable because of all the hype around low fat foods, and we will consume more of that product! Every ones a winner! Except us that is because we are still piling on the pounds and spending more money helping to inflate shareholders wallets.
The truth is that many people should reduce the amount of fat in their Diets, especially saturated fats. Unfortunately food producers have simply jumped on the bandwagon to provide us with an evermore bewildering choice of "healthier" alternatives that as you can now see turn out not to be so healthy after all.
