Lots to Lose

If you have been overweight for a long time, always battled with your weight if yo yo  dieted your way to being obese then it can be hard to muster the enthusiasm to do something about a situation that seems out of your control. The first thing to do if you haven’t done so is to get yourself checked out for diabetes and possibly thyroid function at your doctors. Thyroid function is easily rectified with medication.

Once diabetes is under control and that means having to stick to a low glycaemic index diet then you will probably find that your weight will start to reduce without too much effort. However, sometimes if there is a real desire to comfort eat and that usually means sweets, chocolate, pastries, bread and crisps, all those foods that don’t hep with diabetes then you probably need additional help.
Comfort eating and binging can result in fairly rapid weight gain. Binging falls into the category of a dysfunctional cycle of behaviour. You feel low, so you eat to feel better which you do for a while then you feel guilty for having eaten too much which makes you feel low again and the whole thing starts again.

Weight related health problems range from high blood pressure to diabetes to arthritis, systemic Candida Albicans (thrush) not to mention the mental health problems, low self esteem and general feeling of hopelessness. All these symptoms can be relieved or eliminated by reducing the amount of sugar and refined starch in your diet. Candida in particular loves sugar and also it is worth avoiding yeast products such as marmite, certain stock cubes and bread. Candida doesn’t just mean thrush, it is what causes the red sore patches in the folds of skin particularly where the stomach is likely to hang over due to excess weight (apron fold). Be extra vigilant with hygiene. It is worth using a non talc based powder such as Lanacaine Medicated powder to help keep areas between folds of skin dry and germ free. (Avoid perfumed powders)

Are you are gaining weight but not sure why? If your activity levels are normal and you haven’t changed what you eat or how much you eat then it is worth a trip to your doctor to find out if there is any underlying metabolic problem. Typically your doctor should offer you a diabetes check and possibly a thyroid function check. Once diabetes or thyroid deficiency is under control then your weight should stabilise or even reduce. If you need further help with reducing your weight then I can help you further so please get in touch.

Do you find knowing what to eat is a problem? Or perhaps you feel you know what you should eat, perhaps you are sticking to what you think is a healthy diet but still gaining weight? Are you struggling with portion size? By eating the right foods it is possible to lose weight and then to maintain it without feeling hungry all the time. Choosing foods that don’t raise the blood sugar is one way to ensure you aren’t gripped with hunger all the time and aren’t tempted to overeat or go mad with high sugar foods. Eat as many of your veggies as possible raw. Spinach is excellent raw in salads so is shredded cabbage. Nuts are excellent nutritious low GI (glycaemic index) foods. Many people think they are fattening but this simply isn’t true. Much of the fat content of nuts is bound up with fibre making them an excellent slow release food.
